What the free edition leaves out
Scroll sideways to view all columns →The official pages do not say enough about the free edition to give a verdict. “Not confirmed” means the official pages we read did not say, so we do not guess.
| Feature | Free edition | Details | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| SSO / SAML | Free | The SAML docs list Tier Free, Premium and Ultimate for GitLab Self-Managed. | Source ↗ |
| Role-based access control | Free | The permissions docs list Tier Free, Premium and Ultimate and describe Guest, Reporter, Developer, Maintainer and Owner roles. The tier of custom roles was not stated on that page. | Source ↗ |
| Audit logs | Not confirmed | The instance audit events page lists Premium and Ultimate, while the general audit events page is headed Free, Premium and Ultimate; the two pages point different ways, so this stays unconfirmed. | Source ↗ |
| Multi-user / teams | Free | The permissions docs for roles across users and projects list Tier Free, Premium and Ultimate. | Source ↗ |
| Backups and restore | Free | The backup and restore docs list Tier Free, Premium and Ultimate. | Source ↗ |
| API access | Free | The REST API docs list Tier Free, Premium and Ultimate and the GitLab Self-Managed offering. | Source ↗ |
| Support SLA | Paid | The pricing page lists Priority Support for Premium and Ultimate, with 24/7 handling for Severity 1 requests. | Source ↗ |
Best for
Teams that want source hosting, reviews and CI/CD in one product on their own servers.
Why choose it over GitHub
The Community Edition code is MIT licensed, and the docs list SAML sign-in, roles, backups and the REST API in the Free tier of self-managed GitLab.
Where it falls short
The main repository mixes MIT code with an ee/ directory under a commercial license, and the Enterprise Edition package needs a subscription for production use beyond the Free tier. Priority support is listed only for Premium and Ultimate. The requirements page gives a single-node baseline of 8 vCPU and 16 GB RAM.

- GitHub — GitLab hosts Git repositories with issues, merge requests and CI, which overlaps with GitHub.
