The free edition covers the features teams usually need; we found nothing important held back. “Not confirmed” means the official pages we read did not say, so we do not guess.

Best for

Teams and individuals who want one self-hosted chat interface for many AI providers, with SSO and agents, and are comfortable running a multi-container Docker stack.

Why choose it over ChatGPT

It supports many model providers in one interface, so you are not locked to OpenAI. It is MIT-licensed and self-hosted, so your data stays on your own infrastructure, and sign-in options (OAuth, OIDC, SAML, LDAP) and roles are listed with no paid tier.

Where it falls short

You deploy and maintain MongoDB, Meilisearch, a vector database and the RAG API yourself. The Admin Panel is labelled Preview and audit logging is limited. LibreChat lists community support only.

Open-source alternative to

  • ChatGPT — LibreChat is a free, provider-agnostic, self-hosted ChatGPT-style interface.
